It\u2019s a series of jobs and experiences that help employees reach their ultimate career objectives and future goals.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an employee creates their career path, they are not the only one who benefits. Employers also benefit when employees are more engaged in their job and long-term relationship with the company. This improves not only employee morale, but employee profitability as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-the-different-types-of-career-paths\">What Are the Different Types of Career Paths?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definition of a career path can be vertical or horizontal, depending on a person\u2019s opportunities, preferences, and aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vertical career paths<\/strong>&nbsp;include either advancement to higher-level positions or movement to a lower-level position, depending on an individual\u2019s desire for increased or decreased job responsibility and time commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Horizontal career paths<\/strong>&nbsp;include lateral movement either within an organization, an industry, or across multiple industries, depending on an individual\u2019s desire to learn new skills or have different experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-examples-of-career-paths\">What Are Examples of Career Paths?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Career paths can take many different routes throughout an employee\u2019s professional years, but here are four examples of different career paths that an employee can take:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vertical Construction Career Path<\/strong>&nbsp;= Construction Laborer \u2197 Supervisor \u2197 Foreman \u2197 Project Manager \u2197 Construction Manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Horizontal Construction Career Path<\/strong>&nbsp;= Construction Training Director \u2192 Occupational Health Officer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vertical Human Resources Career Path<\/strong>&nbsp;= Human Resource Assistant \u2197 Human Resources Specialist \u2197 Assistant Director of Human Resources \u2197 Director of Human Resources \u2198 Human Resources Consultant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Horizontal Human Resources Career Path<\/strong>&nbsp;= Assistant Job Recruiter \u2192 Human Resource Assistant \u2192 Benefits Assistant \u2192 Insurance Agent Assistant<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-you-choose-a-career-path\">How Do You Choose a Career Path?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To choose a career path, an employee must consider their personality, career goals, and future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are three steps to take when assisting an employee with making intentional, strategic choices for their career path:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reflect on your personality.<\/strong>&nbsp;What are your core values? What type of work brings you fulfillment? Do you enjoy specializing in one or two niche areas, or would you rather be a generalist? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? What type of people do you enjoy working with?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decide on a few career goals.<\/strong>&nbsp;Do you want to eventually become an executive, or will you be happier with a less demanding position? What&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamboohr.com\/hr-glossary\/job-classification\/\">job classification<\/a>&nbsp;do you strive to have listed after your name on a business card? Is there a specific salary you want to earn (and by when)? What is your preferred work schedule and location?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Determine any future plans that must work into your career path.<\/strong>Are you willing to go back to school if needed? Are you planning to take any significant amount of time off for a life event? Are you determined to retire early?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answering these questions will guide your employee toward or away from certain career paths that do or do not fit their personality, career goals, and future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-you-create-a-career-path\">How Do You Create a Career Path?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To create an effective and fulfilling career path that will meet your employee\u2019s goals and objectives, they should follow these six steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify core values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on fields and niche areas of passion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess current education level and skill set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outline career goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamboohr.com\/hr-glossary\/basic-salary-meaning\/\">basic salary<\/a>&nbsp;needs and desires (and a timeframe for meeting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamboohr.com\/hr-glossary\/compensation\/\">compensation<\/a>&nbsp;goals).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write up a five-year career plan listing all skills, experiences, and job titles that must be met within desired time frames. Do the same with a 10-year career plan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Career pathing is often done by an employee during a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamboohr.com\/hr-glossary\/performance-review\/\">performance review<\/a>&nbsp;under the guidance of their manager or HR representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-you-follow-a-career-path\">How Do You Follow a Career Path?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To successfully follow a determined career path, an employee must be willing to continually learn new skills, network with peers, and occasionally take a lateral (or backward) move in order to get ahead in the long run.
